Marc Huybrechts
Dr. Marc A. Huybrechts is a Professor of Maritime and Transport Law, and Marine Insurance Law.
Dr. Iur. (K.U. Leuven 1964); LL.M. (Berkeley 1966), Professor Huybrechts teaches Maritime and Transport Law, and Marine Insurance at the Catholic University of Leuven (K.U. Leuven), Marine Insurance and Transport Insurance, and Comparative Law at the University of Antwerp and Itmma ( Institute for Port and Transport Operators Antwerp). He was a Visiting Professor at the universities of Xi’an (People’s Republic of China) and Kansai (Osaka-Japan) as well as at the University of Cape Town. At present he is visiting professor at the Dalian Maritime University (China).

He is a member of the Antwerp and Brussels Bar and former partner of the Elegis Law Office and at present he is an “off-counsel” in the Elegis office which he founded in 1982. In 2005 he was appointed as an auxiliary Justice at the Court of Appeal of Antwerp and he hears regularly appeal cases ( first ter and fifth ter chamber of the Court of Appeal). He is a Titular Member of the Comité Maritime International and (former) Vice-President of the Benelux Committee of the ‘Norske Veritas’Classification Society. From 1998 to 2000 he was president of the European Institute of Maritime and Transport Law at the Antwerp University. He is former director of the Professional training School for Lawyers of the Antwerp Bar,(école du stage) and former member of the evaluation board on permanent education of the Flemish Law Society.
He is the editor of the Section Transport Law of the International Encyclopaedia of Laws, and editor Transport Law for “Larcier” Publishing Company and member of the board of editors of “ Tijdschrift voor Vervoer en Recht”.
